Whole rooms
When every ceiling in a room is coming down, we enclose the room under negative air pressure first, with 6-mil plastic over any gaps.

Got a popcorn ceiling that tested positive? We empty the room, seal it, soak the texture and scrape it down wet, bag by bag. What is left is a bare ceiling, ready for patching or a smooth coat.
To DEQ, ceiling texture is a textbook friable material, and only an abatement contractor licensed by DEQ may take it down. Gresham, Wood Village and Oregon City ceilings are part of our work.

A brown ring means a leak at some point. Find and fix the leak before the new finish goes up, and tell us about it, since wet texture can be heavier or looser than dry.
Paint over popcorn can change how it takes water. We check for paint while sampling and plan the soaking around it.
Tall stairwells and long halls need more setup than a bedroom. We look at height and access during the walk-through so the price reflects them.
Expect the sealed room to be off limits until the ceiling is clean and the plastic comes down. The rest of the house can stay in use.
Owners who live in the home may scrape their own ceiling, though DEQ strongly recommends hiring a licensed contractor. The bagging and landfill rules still apply.
